World Mental Health Day

As a Firm we understand the importance of managing mental health in the workplace and we appreciate that this can be challenging to manage in smaller businesses. But this doesn’t mean it should be forgotten. 

In support of World Mental Health day (10th October 2019) and to raise awareness of mental health problems, we have been running our own mental health campaign internally, including advice and tips on how to improve wellbeing. 

We’ve put together some useful tips on how you can improve mental health in the workplace and how you can encourage others to take care of themselves:

1. Encourage all staff to take a break 

Especially for those that are on longer shifts. During busy periods people can feel as though they don’t have the time to take a break. However, it is important to take a break from the workstation. Failure to take breaks may result in “burn out” leading to absenteeism.

Statistics: 61%of employees have experienced mental health issues due to work or where work was a related factor (Business in the community, Mental Health at Work 2018 report)

Tip: always work in line with legislation, take a look at rest breaks at work and maximum working hours

2. Talk about mental health

If you are not openly talking about something, it makes it difficult for others to feel like they can. You should encourage people to talk about how they are feeling. 

Idea: you might even want to consider signing the Time to Change, Employer Pledge.

3. Make sure that you have a way of supporting any employees with mental health problems.

Whether it is through an employee helpline, being aware of the charities able to help those with mental health problems or training staff on how to support those with mental health issues.

4.  Make sure that employees feel as though their voice is heard

Whether that is through regular catch-ups and meetings with Management or giving employees the confidence that they can openly speak to Managers within the business about any concerns they may have. Or if someone has a suggestion, try and make sure that they are listened to. 

Don’t allow people to suffer in silence. Promote an honest and open communication line between management and the rest of the business.
